USDA NASS to Collect Updated Information on Planted Acreage

In July, USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will collect updated information on 2019 acres planted to corn, cotton, sorghum, and soybeans in 14 states. NASS previously collected planted acreage information during the first two weeks of June, with the results published in the June 28 Acreage report. Excessive rainfall had prevented planting at the time of the survey, leaving a portion of acres still to be planted for corn in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin; cotton in Arkansas; sorghum in Kansas; and soybeans in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. If the newly collected data justify any changes, NASS will publish updated acreage estimates in the Crop Production report to be released at noon ET on Monday, Aug. 12. It will be available online at www.nass.usda.gov/Publications.

USDA NASS to consider changing its county estimates program

Because of the increasing importance of county level crop statistics, NASS is considering eliminating the publication of Agricultural Statistics District (ASD) level estimates for annual crop county estimates. Some county level estimates do not meet publication standards and must be withheld from publication. In order to maintain the confidentiality of these counties, at least one additional county within the same ASD must also be suppressed. Sometimes this results in the suppression of county level estimates that would otherwise qualify for publication. Without the need for ASD level publication, any other county within the state could be used to provide the complementary coverage, ultimately leading to more counties published within each state. This change would align the publishing approach for the Census of Agriculture and the annual county estimates programs.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) included forecasts of United States and Florida 2017-2018 orange production in the Crop Production report released Oct. 12, 2017. The report does not directly forecast the impact of Hurricane Irma on the 2017-2018 production. Although it is difficult to know the exact impact on the potential crop production, the approximate impact can be implied because of the timing of the storm. The tree inventory survey work was complete and fruit per tree survey work was near planned completion. No additional fruit per tree work was completed after the storm made landfall. The initial measurements of fruit size and the amount of fruit dropped conducted on selected tree limbs occurred soon after the storm.

2013 Walnut Production Down Slightly from the 2012 Final Production

The National Agricultural Statistics Service forecasts the 2013 California walnut production to be 495,000 tons, down slightly from the 2012 final production. The September 5, 2013 forecast is based on the August Walnut Objective Measurement Survey. Because California produces virtually all of the walnuts grown in the United States, this forecasted total represents the expected United States production in 2013. NASS conducted the 2013 Walnut Objective Measurement Survey with funding from the California Walnut Board.

NASS to Resume Milk Production Surveys in October

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service will resume milk production quarterly producer surveys in the new federal fiscal year, which begins October 1, 2013. NASS suspended the surveys in April of this year to meet the budget reductions required by sequestration. The agency uses information gathered in the quarterly surveys along with various sources of administrative data to establish the monthly milk production estimates. With the quarterly surveys, the dairy cow and milk per cow statistics will once again be available. These are critical data points for interested parties to forecast future milk supply. The program will resume with a late September mailing of the survey form to producers and the release of resulting data on October 21.

NASS and Statistics Canada Suspend Joint August Cattle Statistics Publication

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will not publish the United States and Canadian Cattle report scheduled for 3:00 p.m. August 22, 2013. Due to reduced funding caused by sequestration, NASS did not collect nor publish the July Cattle inventory data. Those estimates are therefore not available for inclusion in the joint 2013 United States and Canadian Cattle report, which is normally produced annually in cooperation with Statistics Canada. The next joint release of cattle estimates for the United States and Canada is scheduled for February 2014 (The February report also includes sheep.).

NASS to Provide Partial Milk Production Estimates for the Remainder of Fiscal Year 2013

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service will provide an estimate of U.S. milk production each month through September, 2013, which is the end of Federal Fiscal Year 2013. The agency will use only various sources of administrative data to establish the monthly milk production estimates rather than incorporating information from the two remaining quarterly producer surveys, as is presently done. Milk production is one element of the monthly Milk Production report that NASS suspended last month to meet sequestration requirements. Because NASS is not conducting milk producer surveys, the dairy cow and milk per cow statistics that were provided in previous reports will not be available. In order to provide the additional estimates and true up estimates based on administrative data, a scientifically based statistical survey will be necessary in the longer term.

NASS Suspends Certain Statistical Estimates and Reports Due to Sequestration

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service is suspending a number of statistical surveys and reports for the remainder of the fiscal year due to reduced funding caused by sequestration. Before deciding upon the program suspensions, NASS reviewed its survey programs against mission- and user-based criteria as well as the amount of time remaining in the fiscal year to conduct the surveys with the goal of finding available cost savings and maintaining the strongest data in service to agriculture. The decision to suspend these reports was not made lightly, but it was nevertheless necessary, given the funding situation.
